Sprofonderà l'odore acre dei tigli
nella notte di pioggia. Sarà vano
il tempo della gioia, la sua furia,
quel suo morso di fulmine che schianta.
Rimane appena aperta l'indolenza,
il ricordo d'un gesto, d'una sillaba,
ma come d'un volo lento d'uccelli
fra vapori di nebbia. E ancora attendi,
non so che cosa, mia sperduta; forse
un'ora che decida, che richiami
il principio o la fine: uguale sorte,
ormai. Qui nero il fumo degli incendi
secca ancora la gola. Se lo puoi,
dimentica quel sapore di zolfo,
e la paura. Le parole ci stancano,
risalgono da un'acqua lapidata;
forse il cuore ci resta, forse il cuore...

PERHAPS THE HEART
The sharp smell of the limes will drown
in the night of rain. The time of joy,
the frenzy, with its shattering lightning
bite will be vain. Numbness is all
that remains, a remembered gesture,
a syllable, but like a slow flight of birds
in a haze of mist. And still you wait
for I know not what, my lost one;
perhaps a decisive hour
that evokes the beginning or end:
the same fate from now on.
Here the black smoke of the fires
still parches the throat. If you can,
forget that taste of sulphur, and the fear.
Words weary us, rising again from a flailed water;
perhaps the heart is left us, perhaps the heart.

TALÁN A SZÍV
A hársak csípős illata elmerül
az esős éjszakában. Hiábavaló lesz
az öröm korszaka, viharos kitörése:
villámharapása szétporlik, mint a víz.
Alig marad leplezetlen a fásultság,
egy kézmozdulat, egy szótag emléke,
de csak mint a madár lassú röpte
a köd párái között. És vársz még,
nem tudod mit, eltévedt kedvesem; talán
egy órát, mely döntsön, hogy visszahívd
a kezdetet vagy a végét: egyenlő sorsát
immár mindannyiunknak. Itt tűzvészek füstje feketén
kaparja még a torkot. Ha tudod,
felejtsd el ezt a kén-ízt, felejtsd el
a félelmet. A szavak fárasztanak,
köd-medrű vízből másznak elő;
talán a szív marad meg, talán csak a szív.
