Emily Dickinson

(Dec. 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886)
.

Water is taught by thirst;
Land, by the oceans passed;
  Transport, by throe;
Peace, by its battles told;
Love, by memorial mould;
  Birds, by the snow.

 *

Safe in their alabaster chambers,
Untouched by morning
And untouched by noon,
Sleep the meek members of the resurrection —
Rafter of satin,
And roof of stone.

Light laughs the breeze
In her castle of sunshine;
Babbles the bee in a stolid ear;
Pipe the sweet birds in ignorant cadence,—
Ah, what sagacity perished here!

Grand go the years in the crescent above them;
Worlds scoop their arcs,
And firmaments row,
Diadems drop and Doges surrender,
Soundless as dots on a disk of snow.

Springs shake the sills
But the echoes stiffen,
Hoar in the window
And numb the door.
Tribes of eclipse in tents of marble
Staples of Ages have buckled there

Springs shake the seals
But the silence stiffens
Frosts unhook in the Northern zones,
Icicles crawl from Polar caverns
Midnight in marble refutes the suns.

135.

Vízre a szomj tanít,
Földre: járt Óceán,
Üdvre: beléhaló,
Békére: harci hír,
Szerelemre: a sír,
Madárra: hó.

216.

Alabástrom kamrába zárva,
Nincs soha reggel
És nincs soha dél,
Jámboran szúnynak a feltámadandók —
Selyem a padlás,
Kő a fedél.

Felettük csillog
Várában a szellő,
Egykedvű kalászon zümmög a méh,
Madár fütyül el-elakadozva —
Mi porladt itt el, míly bölcsesség!

Föléjük évek s mennyek sorakoznak,
Világok vájják
Íveiket,
Hullnak diadémok és tűnnek a dogék,
Mint a hó korongján a jelek.

Tavasz ráz ajtót,
De az echo dermedt,
Dérből az ablak
S a kapu befagy.
Márványkamrákban napfogyatkozások,
Korszakok falkái ott porlanak.

Tavasz ráz zárat,
De a csend dermedt,
Északi tájról szabadul a fagy,
Jégcsapok kúsznak sarki üregből,
Márványban az éjfél megcáfol, te Nap.
